Zawadi Nyong’o, a Kenyan feminist, activist, and daughter of Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, shared a deeply personal milestone with the world in a touching and powerful moment of visibility. The caption was simple, but it relayed a strong message. Zawadi opens up about being an LGBTQ member The post was Zawadi’s first public post coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community, which got a lot of attention on Kenyan social media and beyond.
She opened up about how emotional the moment was in a follow-up Instagram Story. She wrote: “I’ve been too afraid to do this for way too long! But this morning I woke up and said enough! This has been a long time coming!” She admitted that she was scared and said that sharing was “probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done.” Her brother Peter Nyong’o also responded to her post with love emojis, writing. “My family.” Zawadi’s announcement is important for her journey and for LGBTQ+ visibility in Kenya, where being part of the community can be difficult both legally and socially. Her honesty has sent a strong message of bravery and support because, for one, she is a public figure and part of a well-known family. Many people praised her openness and the happiness that was visible in the family photo that she posted. Zawadi is known for her work in feminist advocacy, social justice, and digital activism.
She started Zero by Zawadi and has been a strong supporter of sexual and reproductive rights, including for people with disabilities, and giving young people power. Kenyans react to her revelation Her followers lauded her for finally being true to herself. Here is what Kenyans had to say: chrismurithi: “All the love! Beautiful family.” kevmwachiro: “Super super proud of you. Happy to see your beautiful family.” cityclbk: “If so much history wasn’t erased there would’ve been no need to come out….congratulations.” bookofkeri: “Zawadiiiiiiiiii always have and always will love you!
