Raila Odinga: Cardiologist Reveals Efforts Made to Save Former Prime Minister Before His Passing

The country was thrown into mourning after the former prime minister and the Orange Democratic Movement party leader, Raila Odinga, was pronounced dead. A cardiologist at the Devamatha Hospital has spoken after former prime minister Raila Odinga’s death. Raila passed away in India, where he had gone to seek medical attention. What happened to Raila Odinga? Before his death, Raila had experienced breathing difficulties that caused him to collapse at 7:45 am during his morning walk.  He was then rushed to the Devamatha Hospital for medical attention, but his health quickly deteriorated. Doctors at the facility stated that Raila suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, October 15, Dr Fons, a cardiologist at Devamatha Hospital, gave a breakdown of the efforts made to save Raila Odinga’s life. She stated that upon Raila’s arrival at the facility, they began administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). This method can save a life after cardiac arrest by helping circulate blood to the brain and other vital organs when the heart stops or beats ineffectively. When CPR proved ineffective, Fons said they attempted other methods, including putting a tube in Raila’s respiratory system, but those also failed to improve his condition. He was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with all the staff and the facilities. They managed to stabilise him for a while “We continued CPR and other measures. Despite these efforts, he did not survive. We are very sorry to inform you that he is no longer with us. We pass our prayers and condolences to his family and the Kenyan people,” Fons said. Fons also provided Raila’s medical history when he was brought in for emergency care at the facility.

“He was diabetic and hypertensive. He was a chronic disease patient. He had right lower limb DVT for which he was put on IVC filter,” she added. Meanwhile, the body of the late prime minister, covered with a green sheet, was seen being moved on a stretcher.
