The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a teenager accused of disrespecting the Kenyan national flag during a football match at Nyayo Stadium.
The incident, which occurred during the highly anticipated clash between Mogadishu City Club and Police FC, has sparked outrage among Kenyans, with many condemning the act as unpatriotic and offensive.
Teen Captured on Video Mishandling Flag
According to authorities, the teenager was captured on video mishandling the national flag while in the stands, an act that quickly circulated on social media and drew sharp criticism. The viral clip prompted swift action from law enforcement agencies, who launched investigations to track down those responsible.
DCI officials confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody as further investigations are underway. The teenager is expected to face charges under the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act, which strictly prohibits misuse of the flag or any action that undermines its dignity.

The Act provides penalties, including fines and imprisonment, for anyone found guilty of disrespecting the national symbols.
Police also revealed that they are pursuing another suspect believed to have been involved in the incident. “Investigations are ongoing, and we will ensure that anyone linked to this incident is held accountable,” said a senior officer.
Public Reaction and Calls for Patriotism
The incident has reignited conversations about patriotism and respect for national symbols in Kenya. Social media platforms have been awash with reactions, with many Kenyans Kenyans calling for strict enforcement of the law to prevent such acts in the future.
Others, however, have urged authorities to consider the teenager’s age and intentions before passing judgment, arguing that awareness and education about the significance of the flag may be more effective than punishment.
Football stakeholders have also weighed in, stressing the importance of maintaining order and respect during sporting events.
Nyayo Stadium, one of Kenya’s premier sporting arenas, has hosted numerous international and local matches, and the incident has raised concerns about security and monitoring of fans during such high-profile games.
As the suspect awaits formal charges, authorities have urged the public to treat national symbols with the reverence they deserve. “The Kenyan flag represents our unity, pride, and sacrifice. Disrespecting it is not just an insult to the state, but to every citizen,” said the officer.
The outcome of the case is expected to set a precedent for how similar offenses will be handled in the future.
