A man has died and another injured after their vehicle was involved in a tragic accident along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Machakos County.

Police identified the deceased as Dennis Kasyoki, who was driving a Ford Ranger at the time of the crash.

He died on the spot after the vehicle was hit by a trailer in Primarosa area in Athi River subcounty shortly after midnight on Sunday.

According to a police report filed at Athi River Police Station, both the Ford Ranger and the trailer, a Mercedes Actros ferrying a container of used shoes from Mombasa to Congo, were headed towards Nairobi when the accident occurred.

Investigators said the Ford Ranger driver overtook the trailer and cut in abruptly, leading to a collision at the rear. Both vehicles lost control and veered off to the right side of the road, where the container toppled and landed on the Ford Ranger.

“The accident occurred today, 22/09/2025, at around 12.20am along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway at Primarosa area. It involved a transit motor vehicle of Mercedes Actros make, driven by Abdullahi Ouru Hillow, and a car of Ford Ranger make driven by one Dennis Kasyoki (deceased),” the police report read in part.

A passenger in the Ford Ranger, identified as James Mwangangi Mulatya, sustained injuries and was rushed to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River after complaining of general body pain. The trailer driver escaped unhurt.

Traffic police officers from Athi River visited the scene to document the crash. Both wrecks remained at the site by press time as efforts to clear them continued.

Police said investigations into the fatal accident have been launched.
