How university students are turning pool playing into a business

What was once a casual break-time pastime is fast becoming an entrepreneurial venture for university students. Pool tables, long associated with leisure and socializing, are now doubling as a source of income for students juggling academics and side hustles.

Across university towns, the popularity of billiards is sparking a small but growing business trend. Cafés, pubs, and student lounges are increasingly installing pool tables, opening up opportunities for students to cash in.

From charging for hourly play to hosting themed pool nights and tournaments, students are finding creative ways to turn the game into a steady revenue stream. For some, it’s as simple as managing tables in high-traffic spots on campus; for others, it means organizing larger-scale competitions or even offering lessons.

“The appeal is the flexibility,” said one student entrepreneur who runs pool sessions at a local café. “You can start small and build it around your schedule. It doesn’t get in the way of classes.”

With relatively low startup costs and consistent demand from students looking to unwind, the business model has proven attractive. In buzzing student centers, pool tables can generate a reliable income, especially when paired with events that draw bigger crowds.

The sport’s growing visibility on social media has also fueled its rise. Clips of trick shots and tournament highlights circulate widely online, giving students added incentive to sharpen their skills while creating business opportunities.

What began as a casual game after lectures is now part of a broader cultural shift—where leisure doubles as livelihood. And as interest in recreational sports like pool continues to rise, the hustle shows no signs of slowing down.

For university students, the pool has become more than just a game: it’s a chance to earn, connect, and carve out a piece of campus culture on their own terms.
