Onyango hoping to sharpen himself at Mathare United

Mathare United’s new signing, Jacob “Yobo” Onyango, is hoping to grow into a more complete defensive midfielder under the Slum Boys’ colours in the 2025/26 campaign under the watchful eye of head coach John Kamau.

‎The Nairobi-based outfit confirmed Onyango’s arrival this week, just days after unveiling forward John Macharia, as coach Kamau continues to quietly assemble a squad capable of punching into the top half of the FKF Premier League.

‎‎”Mathare United is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Onyango, who will wear the famous yellow and green jersey for the 25/26 season,” the club statement read.

‎‎”The central midfielder becomes our second signing of the season, following that of Macharia and adds a wealth of experience to the team,” the statement added.

‎Mathare finished 10th last season on 42 points but are aiming higher this term, with recruitment geared towards a serious tilt at the top six.

‎Onyango arrives after two campaigns with Bidco United, who narrowly survived relegation last season after finishing 15th with 35 points. He has also turned out for Nairobi City Stars, Ulinzi Stars and the now-defunct Nakumatt FC, bringing a wealth of domestic top-flight experience to Kamau’s midfield. ‎”It is a great feeling joining Mathare United, and I thank God for the opportunity,” Onyango said.

‎‎”Mathare is one of the biggest teams in the country. They have won the Premier League, so it’s an honour joining them.”

‎The midfielder is eager to thrive in the Slum Boys’ tactical system, convinced that the move will accelerate his growth as a disciplined holding midfielder. ‎”I look forward to being here and also growing myself as a player.”

Onyango reckons he can be of vital help for the squad both defensively and in attack. ‎”I am a box-to-box midfielder and I bring a lot to the team in terms of attack and defence.”

‎”I believe I will help the team obtain all the season targets,” he added. ‎Having faced Mathare in previous campaigns, Onyango knows the tactical discipline that defines their play. ‎”Mathare play a very tactical game. We found it hard to play against them,” he said. ‎Beyond personal ambitions, Onyango has set his sights on delivering silverware.

‎‎”I want to win the League with the team, and I believe it’s very much possible. Looking at the team we have this season, it’s very much possible to win the League,” he said.

‎Mathare’s last triumph in the league was in 2008 when they amassed 63 points to claim their maiden KPL gong. ‎In that season, they led Sony Sugar (60 points) and Agrochemical (48 points).
