Koitalel Arap Samoei Play Faces Setbacks After Family Raises Concerns

A theatrical production honoring the late freedom hero Koitalel Arap Samoei has run into trouble after his family raised concerns, forcing the director and cast to defend their work.

Playwright Waswa Derrick revealed that the family sent a letter requesting a review of the script and the inclusion of more Nandi actors in future shows.

While Waswa called these “valid concerns,” he noted that it’s difficult to make such changes with limited time before upcoming performances.

He also clarified that the family had distanced itself from a controversial “30% demand” for profits, a claim he said was falsely spread by an unauthorized individual.

The Controversy and Its Impact on the Cast

The controversy has already caused problems for the production. Its August 17 performance was affected by the uncertainty from the family’s letter and road closures.

The timing is particularly sensitive, as the Nandi Cultural Festival, which President William Ruto is expected to attend, is just around the corner.

The cast, who were set to perform at the festival, now face an uncertain future despite the sacrifices they’ve made.

“We appeal for understanding and support,” Waswa said. “The legacy of Koitalel deserves to be honored, but so too does the dedication of those who have brought his story to life.”

The Debate Over Creative Freedom and Legacy

The controversy has triggered a debate online.

Commentator Zippy Okoth argued that copyright protection expires 50 years after an author’s death, making legendary stories open for public interpretation.

He noted that unless a play is adapted from a book, the story can be retold freely.

On the other hand, Lydia Kerubo defended the director, saying, “That family can go ahead and direct their own play with their own Nandi actors. Director Waswa should be celebrated because he included Gen Z and Gen Alpha in the play, making young people respect and cherish their history.”
