Maraga: How I will fund my 2027 campaigns

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has revealed that he will rely on contributions from Kenyans to fund his 2027 presidential bid.

Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV, Maraga unveiled his plan for a campaign built on small donations from Kenyans as low as Sh10.

“I will appeal to Kenyans to contribute to the campaigns. I’ll put in very little money, around Sh1 million or Sh2 million. I don’t have much money,” said the former CJ on July 15.

“With the suffering Kenyans have gone through, I’m sure we’ll get Sh50, 100 from individuals. I’m hoping we’ll get excess, and whatever is left, we will give it to a public cause.”

Maraga expressed confidence that Kenyans, especially the youth and the underrepresented, would support his cause, citing frustration with the administration.

He promised to form a government of professionals and experts, insisting that every public servant must earn their place and perform their duties effectively.

“In my administration, I will make it very clear and I’m making it clear from now that everybody will have to obey the law, starting with me.”

Maraga also condemned the handling of recent Gen Z-led protests, stating that he would have taken a people-centred approach rather than using excessive force.

He criticised the branding of young demonstrators as “terrorists”.

“We need this country to return to the rule of law,” he said.

“The youth were exercising their constitutional right. They should be protected, not abducted or killed.”

Commenting on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s call for a national dialogue, Maraga said he supports a people-driven approach.

“We’ve had dialogues in the past that have not addressed the root causes. It must be people-oriented and not just about positions,” he emphasised.
