Radio 47, crowned Africa’s leader in broadcast technology, boasts of its status as the first fully IP-based broadcast facility

Cape Media owned Radio 47 , has achieved global recognition for establishing Africa’s first fully IP-based broadcast facility.

The station is celebrated for possessing the most advanced IP broadcast infrastructure in Africa and is considered among the most sophisticated globally.

Through continuous innovation and the documentation of its journey, Radio 47 has become a continental pacesetter and a global case study for future-proof broadcasting.

Prof. Simon Gicharu, Chairman of Cape Media LTD, stated, “We didn’t just build a station. We created a platform that inspires broadcasters across the world,” adding that they are “making sure Africa’s achievements are recognized globally”.

Geoffrey Mung’ou, Head of Radio, Cape Media Ltd, emphasized that “Through our platforms, we’ve showcased the power of African engineering and the limitless possibilities of broadcast technology,” and “We’ve proven that Africa can set the pace, not just follow”.

Radio 47’s IP ecosystem, powered by Lawo and delivered by MediaCity Ads Ltd, is being celebrated across continents for its full automation and seamless visual radio integration, advanced remote production capabilities, scalable, future-ready digital infrastructure, and for being the first of its kind fully IP-based broadcast workflow in Africa.

Mwenda Njoka, CEO of Cape Media Ltd, highlighted that “This achievement is not only a win for Cape Media Ltd and Radio 47 but a proud moment for the entire African continent”. He stated, “We set out to create a station that would challenge global standards and we have succeeded. The station’s success is attributed not only to technology but also to its narrative leadership, effectively showcasing African capability and influencing the global perception of African media.

This recognition is a culmination of collaborative efforts with MediaCity Ads Ltd (Rwanda) and various world-class technology partners.

Wayne Wafula, Digital Lead, stated that “The rollout of Radio 47’s fully IP-based, automated hybrid broadcast facility has had a profound impact on our digital growth”. He further explained, “By modernising our workflows and enabling seamless integration with livestreaming and remote production, we have dramatically improved the consistency and quality of our content”.

This has directly driven a surge in their digital performance, with Radio 47 now attracting over 200 million views monthly, along with remarkable increases in reach, audience engagement, and monetization opportunities. Wafula concluded that “This cutting-edge infrastructure has truly positioned us to lead in the evolving digital media landscape”.

As Radio 47 continues to break new ground, the team remains committed to sharing each milestone, ensuring that Africa’s voice in broadcast innovation continues to echo worldwide.

Radio 47, which has the highest reach and celebrated its 2nd anniversary in March, was rated second in audience reach by Ipsos.

Radio 47 is also the first Swahili audiovisual radio station in Kenya, hosting compelling, entertaining, and educational content, delivered by a high-caliber team of presenters.
