Kisii School keen to dominate rugby 15s during the 2025 Western region Prescott Cup

Kisii School is keen to dominate in rugby 15s when the 2025 Western region Prescott Cup gets underway on Saturday at St Mary’s School, Yala.

The Western region Prescott Cup will feature Kisii School, St Mary’s  Yala, and former national secondary schools champions, Butula Boys.

In the opening game, Butula Boys will square out with Kisii School, while hosts St Mary’s School Yala face Butula Boys in the second match.

Kisii School, the three-time Nyanza region secondary school champions and national runners-up, will renew their rivalry with St Mary’s Yala on Sunday.

Kisii School coach Edwin Morara said they will field a full-strength team at the event as they gear up for the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) championships to be held in Kakamega in August.

“This is part of the preparations for FEASSA games. We want to test our team against Yala and Butula,” said Morara.

He added, “We have cemented our place as rugby powerhouses, and we are not just going to show up. We want to lift the Western Region Prescott Cup title. Our goal is to dominate and bring the trophy home.”

St Mary’s School Yala coach George Kerima is hoping to field his development side at the two-day tournament. “I’m using this tournament to prepare my team for next year’s 15’s competition. I will field Form Two and Three players,” remarked Kerima.

He added: “I will include three or four 7s players in the two-day tournament. From the training sessions we have had so far, I can confirm that we shall have a better team than the one we had this year.”

Butula Boys, under coach Bonfotra Alumasa, will use the tournament to prepare for next year’s 15s competition. The school did not participate in this year’s competition after being banned for a year for fielding an ineligible player during last year’s FEASSA games in Mbale, Uganda.

In the Nairobi region girls category, St Theresa’s Girls Kithimu will be up against Rift Valley Academy, while in the second game, Nova Pioneer will battle Rift Valley Academy.
