IPOA reveals names of DCI officers who arrested Albert Ojwang in Homa Bay

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed the names of the DCI officers who arrested social media influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang.

In her submission to the Senate on Wednesday, IPOA Deputy Chairperson Ann Wanjiku said Ojwang was arrested by five officers on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

According to IPOA, the officers included Sergeant Sigei, Sergeant Wesley Kipkorir Kirui, Police Constable Dennis Kinyoni, Police Constable Milton Mwanze, and Police Constable Boniface Rabudo.

Wanjiku said the team went to Lida Centre in Homa Bay County and arrested the deceased at around 2:30 p.m., before taking him to Magwengo Police Station.

She told the Senate that the authority is now working to finalise several tasks, including forwarding all collected forensic samples for analysis, recording statements from additional witnesses and officers at Central Police Station and collecting medical records from Mbagathi Hospital, with feedback expected by the end of the day.

While confirming that IPOA learned about Ojwang’s death through the media, the deputy chairperson revealed that investigations were immediately launched, uncovering several inconsistencies in the National Police Service’s initial version of events.

“One of the key findings was that the CCTV systems located at the OCS’s office had been interfered with,” she said.

Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua demanded clarity on which station Ojwang’ was first booked at upon his arrival in Nairobi County.

Wambua also expressed concern about whether Ojwang’ was in good health when being booked in Nairobi.

“Who interfered with the CCTV cameras on the night in question? You cannot tell us you don’t know. Because if you do, there is a big problem, Mr. IG,” Wambua posed.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also disclosed the chronology of events leading to Ojwang’s arrest in Homa Bay on June 7, 2025, which began with a formal complaint filed by Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat.

Kanja said Lagat had submitted the complaint to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over posts made on an X (formerly Twitter) account, which alleged that he was under investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for corruption.
