Benefits of food safety

Observed every June 7, World Food Safety Day raises awareness of the importance of safe food in protecting health.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), food safety keeps over 200 foodborne illnesses at bay.

It supports healthy diets, sustains life, and ensures food is prepared and produced safely.

Safe food also boosts access to trade and opens new markets. It reduces food loss and waste, key in global food sustainability efforts.

Foodborne illnesses are mainly caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or harmful chemicals entering the body through contaminated food or water.

Most of these illnesses are preventable, and safety begins at home, especially in the kitchen.

Every year, unsafe food makes 600 million people sick globally.
