Gov’t to roll out AI training for public servants by July 2025

Artificial Intelligence (AI) training for public servants is set to be launched and rolled out by July 2025. This strategic initiative aims to enhance service delivery and drive innovation across the public sector.

Principal Secretaries Dr. Jane Imbunya (Public Service and Human Capital) and Eng. John Kipchumba Tanui (ICT & Digital Economy) today met with Prof. Nura Mohamed, Director General of the Kenya School of Government (KSG), alongside other KSG directors, to finalize plans for the AI skilling programs.

The programs will target all professional cadres within the public service—including Procurement, Administrative Services, Human Resource Management, Corporate Communications, and Finance. Tailored AI training modules will be developed to cater to the diverse needs of public officers at all levels.

Dr. Imbunya reaffirmed her commitment, and that of the State Department, to ensuring the successful launch and implementation of the programs. A structured roadmap will be established to facilitate effective tracking, follow-up, and sustainability of training outcomes.

To secure leadership support and drive adoption, a dedicated AI module for Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries will be introduced. This will help promote awareness of AI’s significance and ensure high-level buy-in. Participants will be nominated by their respective Ministries, State Departments, and Agencies, with a focus on engaging youth.

The training programs will be delivered through KSG’s eLearning Information and Technology Institute and the Regional Centre of Competence in Digital and AI Skilling in the Public Sector.

KSG will continue to collaborate with the State Departments of Public Service and ICT, along with other stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, to ensure seamless program implementation.

This initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader vision to become a regional leader in digital and AI innovation, as outlined in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

The recent establishment of the Africa Centre of Competence for Digital and AI Skilling at KSG further reinforces the government’s commitment to equipping all public servants with the essential skills required for a digital future.
