Family of murdered MMU student deny dating claims, say suspect harassed her

Before Sylvia Kemunto’s body was found lifeless, her mother had bought her a suitcase to pack her clothes and leave the hostel at Multimedia University in Rongai.

Never did she think that the bag would be used to stuff her daughter’s lifeless body, which was found inside a rooftop tank.

According to the family, they reached a decision to move Kemunto from the University hostel after she complained of harassment from fellow student – Erick Mutinda.

Preliminary investigations presented in court indicate that Kemunto and Mutinda, a prime suspect in her murder, were first-year students at Multimedia University. One was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, the other a Bachelor of Mathematics for Computer Science. Investigators claimed the two had been in a relationship since September 2024.

However, the family of Sylvia Kemunto has denied the claims. Speaking after a court proceeding on Monday, the family said Kemunto was never in a relationship with Mutinda. Instead, they said Sylvia had complained of persistent harassment from Mutinda after she allegedly rejected his advances.

They said it was because of that harassment that Sylvia decided to leave the university hostel and return home to Kawangware, opting to commute to school.

On the day of the incident, her mother had bought her the suitcase so she could return to campus, pack her belongings, and come home.

Sylvia was supposed to sit for her exams this week.
