A group of 100 youths formerly engaged in crime have surrendered and pledged to abandon criminal activities in a ceremony held at Nikodem Hall in Likoni Sub-County.

The youths vowed to turn their lives around and refrain from offenses such as robbery, theft, and acts of terrorism.

Coast Regional Police Commander Ali Nuno, Mombasa County Commissioner Mohammed Nur, Deputy Governor Francis Thoya, and Timbwani MCA Hamisi Salim were among those who presided over the event held on Monday.

One of the reformed individuals attributed their past involvement in crime to strained relations with law enforcement agencies.

He further decried the alleged exploitation of vulnerable youth by politicians during election campaigns, claiming they were often abandoned afterward.

The police pledged to support the youths in finding lawful means of livelihood, while civil society organizations encouraged them to enroll in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, with tuition fees covered by the county government through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

The county government further assured the group that they would be considered for employment opportunities, urging them to acquire relevant skills to enhance their chances.
