On Sunday, March 2, the former prime minister held a consultative meeting with ODM delegates in Mombasa county.  Addressing the press, the former prime minister renewed calls for the compensation of victims affected by political protests against the Kenya Kwanza administration dating back to 2023. The veteran opposition leader insisted that individuals who sustained injuries during the Azimio protests of 2023 and the victims of the Gen Z protests in 2024 must be compensated.

According to Raila, who is expected to sign a political deal with Ruto, youth who were injured and families of those who lost their lives deserve some form of financial redress. “The youth who sustained injuries and parents of those who died in 2023 during the Azimio protests and the Gen Z protests of last year have to be compensated. Those are the conditions we are setting. But the most important thing is that such incidents should not be happening in our country,” Raila stated. Raila, who recently lost his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson seat, disclosed that in his consultations, various issues that need fixing have come up.

He stated that key issues include ethnic discrimination, especially when Kenyans are looking for jobs, corruption, weakening devolution, especially in health, education matters and the arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances must be resolved by Ruto’s administration.
