President William Ruto is today expected to launch a number of Affordable Housing Projects which will significantly increase housing and job creation in the Coastal region

The projects which are being undertaken by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, are situated in Mokowe (Lamu), Tezo (Kilifi), and Voi (Taita Taveta).

They are expected to relieve the nation’s housing shortage and generate thousands of job opportunities.

Residents from the three counties have praised the government’s commitment to affordable housing ahead of the groundbreaking ceremonies, acknowledging that it has the potential to improve urban settlements, boost local businesses, and create jobs.

Voi Pool Housing Projects

In Voi, Taita Taveta County, the Voi Pool Housing Project will deliver 458 units, including social, affordable, and market-rate housing, along with commercial spaces and recreational facilities.

The Ksh 1.1 billion project will employ over 150 workers daily, benefiting construction workers, masons, electricians, and suppliers.

Local artisans and laborers have expressed optimism, noting that the project provides much-needed job opportunities for young people seeking employment.

Many rely on construction jobs to support their families, and the project is expected to have a significant impact on their livelihoods.

Tezo Affordable Housing Project

Similarly, in Tezo, Kilifi County, the Tezo Affordable Housing Project will be the largest of the three, with 1,000 units planned on a five-acre site. The project estimated at Ksh. 2.5 billion is projected to inject over Ksh 1 billion into the local economy and provide steady employment for over 200 workers during construction.

The development is expected to create new opportunities for local businesses and suppliers, driving demand for construction materials such as sand, cement, and ballast, as well as benefiting food vendors and other service providers near the site.

200 workers are expected to be employed through the project daily, including skilled professionals and general construction workers

The government also plans to integrate the local Jua Kali artisans in collaboration with TVET colleges, NCA, and NITA.

Mokowe Affordable Housing Project

In Lamu County, the Mokowe Affordable Housing Project will bring 393 units and 75 commercial shops, serving as a key driver of economic growth in Mokowe town.

The Ksh 1.2 billion project will prioritize local labor and suppliers, with the government partnering with Jua Kali artisans and vocational training institutions to create sustainable employment opportunities.

The Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, estimates that the project will create direct employment for approximately 120 workers daily, including skilled professionals such as electricians, plumbers, and masons.

Its expected to inject over KES 400 million into the local economy, integrate local Jua Kali artisans and MSMEs in collaboration with TVET colleges as well as partner with Mokowe Vocational Training Center for technical support and skills development.

Government has committed to source raw materials locally within Lamu County.

During his coastal tour, President Ruto is expected to reaffirm the government’s commitment to affordable housing, emphasizing its role in job creation, urban transformation, and economic empowerment.

The projects align with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which prioritizes housing as a key driver of employment and urban development.

As the groundbreaking ceremonies take place Monday, residents across the coastal region remain hopeful that these developments will improve living standards, provide stable employment, and drive long-term economic growth.
