Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has stated that it is both tactical and strategic for the ANC Party to merge with the ruling UDA party ahead of President William Ruto’s 2027 re-election bid.
Mudavadi reiterated that the decision to join forces with UDA is not a gamble. He welcomed the leadership of Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, who is also representing ANC as the merger process unfolds.
He noted that the politically significant bloc of over 2.2 million voters in Western Kenya—his home region—is crucial for President Ruto’s re-election. To consolidate support from the region, Mudavadi believes it is wise to present a united front as they approach the 2027 elections.
“I want to tell off the critics that from where I sit, the decisions we talk about and the moves I take are always tough and extremely complex. I never go for populist decisions as many would imagine, and this one too holds water.” Mudavadi stated
“This merger is by amalgamation. Until the lapse of all steps in accordance with the Political Parties Act, each party shall still retain its identity as no party has been swallowed by the other. Thereafter, the Merger, by amalgamation, shall be deemed binding.” he explained.
During a recent development tour of Western Kenya with President Ruto, Mudavadi reaffirmed Ruto as his party leader, emphasizing that Kenya must progress together as a united nation, regardless of regional leadership representation.
Mudavadi addressed voters in Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia counties, explaining that the decision to merge is based on a long-term perspective rather than short-term gains.
“We had a conversation about elevating our partnership from a coalition point of view. The unity of parties therefore becomes important in trying to solidify crucial decisions for the benefit of moving the country forward and service delivery to the citizens.” Mudavadi remarked
“Together as a people we must reflect on the shared and common ideals on the primacy of economic empowerment, peace and development.” added Mudavadi.
The Prime CS challenged critics to abandon the idea that one must be a party leader to negotiate effectively. He argued that successful negotiation can occur through persuasion, focusing on policies that will positively affect citizens’ lives and presenting realistic, achievable plans.
As his faction joins UDA, Mudavadi expressed a commitment to giving Kenyans hope for the future.
“We will be soon reaching out to all our supporters both in ANC and UDA, recruiting more members through our ideological approach and assuring them that we are forging a united front that will further deliver this country to a new frontier. Soon there will be no ANC and no UDA, we will have a new baby, with a new name, a new face and a new future.” he stated
Mudavadi says the new approach of a broad-based government will lead to further political realignments, particularly in light of the potential for Raila Odinga’s election as African Union Chair, which could introduce new dynamics to political consolidation in the future.
