Police officers from the Masangora Police Post in Kuria West Sub-County, Migori County, on Tuesday, intercepted a consignment of what was suspected to be cannabis sativa, estimated to be worth Sh3,000,000.

The officers, who were on a routine patrol within the Masangora Market, acted on a tip-off from a concerned member of the public.

During their patrol, they spotted a motorcycle with Tanzanian registration plates carrying four large bags.

Upon noticing the officers, the rider of the motorcycle attempted to flee the scene, abandoning both the motorcycle and the bags.

The bags were immediately seized by the officers, who upon inspection, suspected the contents to be illicit drugs.

Authorities have since begun an investigation into the matter.

On January 7, security officers arrested two suspected drug traffickers and seized drugs in a multi-agency operation conducted in Migori.

The operation which was aimed at dismantling an illicit drug and alcohol syndicate targeted various areas within the county.

It was spearheaded by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA), in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotic Unit (ANU) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

During the raid, officers also recovered 384 tariffs and 628 sticks suspected to be marijuana.

Also recovered were 21.5 litres of chang’aa, dry green plant material suspected to be cannabis packed in two sacks and a basin, and two phones.

A further search on the premises yielded 40 tariffs and 230 sticks of what is suspected to be cannabis, as well as 1.5 litres of chang’aa, uncustomed cigarette packets, dry plant material suspected to be cannabis, and an improvised smoking device.

In August 2024, police seized 73.6kg of Marijuana worth Sh2.2 million on the Migori-Sirare highway.

In a statement then, DCI said the suspect who was at large was intercepted riding a motorcycle carrying two bags containing the drugs.
