A family in Uthiru is grappling with pain and uncertainty after their 22-year-old relative went missing on Saturday, December 21. Peter Muteti, a vocal social media influencer with a significant following and a government critic, disappeared shortly after posting a controversial image of President William Ruto, which sparked outrage online.
According to his girlfriend, Mary Wambui, Muteti left their home at 9am to buy breakfast but never returned. “He went to get breakfast around 9am and did not come back. I went downstairs to check on him, and some witnesses told me that he had been abducted,” said Wambui. Witnesses informed her that armed men had abducted him believed to be police officers and forced into a Subaru vehicle with registration number KCF 035M.
His phone was switched off, making him unreachable. “Do something; we need our brother,” said another relative. Wambui revealed that Muteti had been receiving threats from unknown individuals following the contentious post, prompting him to delete it from his social media account. Muteti’s family pleads with authorities to release kin Christine Kendi, his cousin, called on the DCI sleuths and the police to adhere to due process and disclose Muteti’s whereabouts.
“We understand that Peter has been vocal on X and may have done something offensive, but there is a legal process. He shouldn’t be hidden; he should be presented in court,” she pleaded. The family expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation from the apartment management and the supermarket where the abduction allegedly occurred, citing a climate of fear caused by a spate of recent disappearances in the country. They are urging authorities to review CCTV footage from the area to shed light on the incident. Detectives from Kabete Police Station have launched an investigation into Muteti’s disappearance.
