Young Lawyer Cautioned for Referring to Judges as Guys, Kenyans React: “Gen Z Wamefika Courts”

A funny incident occurred in court during the case of impeached deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. A young lawyer identified as Musungu, representing an interested party in the case, made a casual slip while addressing the judges, calling them “you guys.” Court erupts in laughter during Gachagua’s case This led to an immediate interruption by lawyer Tom Ojienda, who reminded Musungu, “Judges are not guys. ”  This prompted Musungu to quickly correct himself, apologising and addressing the bench as “lordships and ladyships.” The light-hearted exchange caused laughter among those present, adding a brief moment of levity to the proceedings.

 When the video surfaced online, many people were amused, interpreting the young lawyer’s informal language as reflective of Gen Z style infiltrating traditionally formal court decorum. “Ni kama Gen Z lawyers wamefika in courts. He just called judges you guys,” read the caption. Netizens joined in on the humour, with comments ranging from praise for the young lawyer’s effort to predictions that generational shifts might soon reshape courtroom dynamics.
