Businessman Khalif Kairo his girlfriend, Maria Wavinya

Businessman Khalif Kairo has addressed malicious allegations that his girlfriend, Maria Wavinya, initially worked as an escort.

The rumours began online after Wavinya mentioned working for a Chinese man, Mr. Wang, and his wife from 2020 to 2022, where she created content for them.

“I was a content creator from 2020 to 2022, and during that time, I worked for Mr. and Mrs. Wang,” Maria clarified. “We traveled a lot. I’d wake up, and Mr. Wang would say, ‘Pack your bags, we’re going to South Africa.’ I was studying online while also working as an influencer and content creator, but I’ve since retired from content creation.”

Kairo responded to the accusations, saying it’s wrong to assume that every successful woman achieved her success through questionable means.

“Let me give you a secret that many don’t know. There’s a website called ‘Youku,’ which has around 500 million users, mostly Chinese. A handful of Kenyan models have quietly made millions by pushing content and influencing for Chinese companies on that app,” Kairo explained.

He continued: “When a man makes money in this town, they say it’s ‘wash wash.’ When a woman does, they claim she’s an escort or prostitute. That’s the mindset of people who are bitter because they have nothing to show for themselves after 30 years. It’s just jealousy, and we rebuke that spirit.”

Kairo added that Maria, who hails from the Kamba community, was simply doing her work, while earning royalties from her agency in South Africa. “She’s done quiet influencing for big brands like Ferrari, but people prefer to throw shade to get attention on social media.”

Kairo also advised people to focus on their own success instead of accusing others of shady dealings: “Instead of all the talk, work hard, save in a SACCO, and within six months, you can qualify for a loan double or triple your savings. Get a small car and start life without worrying about unnecessary things.”
