Optometrist Samuel Mbeche in Namibia

Optometrist Samuel Mbeche has had an exciting last three weeks, to say the least. Optometrist Samuel Mbeche said the 13,000 km journey was meant to raise awareness about eye care.  In a daring move, the former Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Rugby team captain embarked on a mission that would test his limits. Mbeche rode off on his MW R1200 GS after setting his sights on reaching South Africa on his motorcycle and back.  Dubbed Eyes for Africa on Two Wheels, Mbeche was determined to ride through at least eight nations as he raised awareness about eye care. According to Mbeche, when he set off, his primary goal was to raise awareness about the crucial need for education in preventing blindness. The medic documented his long journey on Facebook as he rode with three other motorbike enthusiasts through the tough terrain. “13,000 km in 22 days through 10 countries from Nairobi Kenya to Southernmost tip of Africa and back on my trusty rusty14-year-old BMW R1200 GS, one set of tyres—never failed me once. From smooth tarmac to rugged gravel, sandy trails to river crossings, I rode to raise eyecare awareness,” he wrote upon setting foot back in Nairobi after an exhilarating three weeks on the road.  What were Mbeche’s struggles The young medic’s journey to South Africa wasn’t short of experiences that he confessed tested his resilience. He highlighted being arrested on foreign land and getting lost since he was using a GPS on his motorbike as some of his tough moments. “Arrested a few times, got lost, battled fatigue, and even dozed off while riding—scary! Sometimes I cried inwardly. But I met incredible people and witnessed the breathtaking beauty of Africa, from the Namib Desert to the southernmost tip. An unforgettable journey of resilience and discovery! It was a relief to cross back into the Country, the welcoming from family and bikers was heart warming,” he said. Mbeche expressed gratitude to all who supported his course through donations and encouragement when he felt like giving up.
