Makueni: 7 People Returning Home from Nairobi Meeting Swept Away by Floods

 

The victims were crossing the swollen River Muuoni aboard a log when it was overpowered by the currents, Nation reported. Kavuthu chief Norman Musyoki said the bodies were yet to be retrieved by Friday morning.  Tragedy at River Muuoni The group was attending the celebrations to mark the Joyful Women Organisation's (JOYWO) 14th anniversary at Nairobi's Kasarani Sports Centre. This would be after a lavish dinner held on the evening of Wednesday, November 22, at State House, Nairobi. Sources confided that the victims turned down counsel from the locals at Kavuthu Township, who had forewarned them of the swollen river. A section of their company heeded advice and spent the night at the foregoing. "Witnesses say seven people died. We are trying to ascertain the exact number. They were sitting on a log floating in the middle of the river after being overwhelmed by the raging waters as they tried to cross. A sudden swelling of the river swept them away as a crowd of witnesses looked on helplessly," Nation quoted Musyoki.  The meteorological department had announced that the early weeks of November would experience heavier rains, months after predicting El Nino climate patterns. Which counties would be affected? Counties to be affected included Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana, Embu, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Muran'ga, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Trans Nzoia, and Nandi. Others were West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Lamu, Tan River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, and Mombasa. With the foregoing, the weatherman advised residents in all the areas mentioned to look for potential floods.
