KeNHA issues advisory to motorists after landslide blocks Meru-Mikinduri-Maua road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a notice alerting motorists driving along the Meru-Mikinduri-Maua (B102) road.

In an advisory shared on Friday, November 3, 2023, the roads authority urged motorists to use alternative routes when accessing the route after a landslide covered up a section of the road.

"KeNHA wishes to notify and caution motorists plying Meru - Mikinduri - Maua (B102) Road of a landslide on the road section which has been occasioned by the heavy downpour experienced in the area," the authority said.

KeNHA, however, indicated that they were on site clearing the road section to restore traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists.

"The public is advised to use alternate routes, to and from Maua town. KeNHA is on site clearing the road section to restore traffic flow and ensure safety of the motorists," they added.

Earlier this week, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a heavy rainfall advisory.

The weatherman announced that heavy rains would be experienced across the northeast, northwest, central highlands, Nairobi, the southeastern lowlands, the western sector and the coast.

The weatherman noted that counties that will be affected include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu, Turkana, Embu, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang'a, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Migori, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Vihiga, Bungoma, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Lamu, Tana-River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi and Mombasa.

The advisory also urged people in landslide-prone areas to be vigilant.

"Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods. Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily especially downstream. Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows when raining to minimize exposure to lightning strikes. The strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages," the weatherman added.
