Mount Kenya University Denies Suspending TikToker for Bashing Exams, Belittling Lecturers' Old Cars

What did MKU student say? Job Onyango posted a video from the exam room, questioning how the paper would help him succeed. "How will this make me rich? I have defined data collection. Now tell me how it will make you rich.  I am doing this to make my parents happy,” he said, using expletives. Onyango also took a dig at the vehicles in the parking lot. “Look at all these old cars-they belong to your lecturers. They are over 60 and driving these old cars, yet they are your role models. You will never be rich until you escape the matrix,” he said. In a letter dated Saturday, October 21, the institution suspended Onyango for a semester until January 2024. He was found guilty of inciting fellow students and community members to commit offences. "This is the final warning. If you are found to have been involved in a similar act in future, you will be expelled.” Why did MKU suspend student? Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Vice Chancellor Professor Deogratius Jaganyi noted that the suspension did not result from the video. “He was brought before the non-academic disciplinary committee for mentioning. He was summoned again after the committee made the verdict.” The VC noted that the committee looked at numerous factors in suspending Onyango while asserting that it was fair. “Why should we suspend a student without due process? We have rules as stipulated in our students' handbook, and he should have access to it. Some students take it as if the decision is biased- it is not. It is a process within the university from the lowest to the highest level.”
