Samburu: Families Spend Night In The Cold After Eviction Over 'Illegal Activities'

Several families in Maralal, Samburu County, were forced to sleep outside in the cold after being evicted from their houses on Wednesday night, after being accused of using the homes to engage in illegal activities.

One of the victims, Rael Mujong, a mother of three, said she was in the process of preparing herself at home, when local officials came to evict her.

The eviction followed allegations that the residents were involved in illegal activities, including running an illicit liquor business, prostitution, and children not attending school.

Rael, who was accused of being among the suspects involved in the illegal activities, denied the allegations.

Authorities said the families were given a notice to vacate, but they disobeyed the order, claiming that they did not receive the notice.

The Maralal chief said, “There is always noise and chaos in the area. The mothers who live there are selling chang'aa and children do not go to school. Rape and prostitution are also rampant, especially among young girls in that household.”

Poverty has been cited by some residents as one of the reasons pushing some to illegal activities.

However, authorities have put the culprits on notice, saying they will face the full force of the law.
