Laban Onserio finally opens up about night he was allegedly caught with grenade
Laban Cliff Onserio, the media personality arrested for the alleged possession of a grenade, has opened up about life after that incident on December 18, 2022. The DPP would later drop the terror charges.
He reassured Mark Masai and Ciku Muiruri that he was doing well but felt bad for the impact that story had on his family.
The established journalist and former Government employee spoke to SemaBox TV, where Laban told Mark and Ciku that it had been a journey of self-discovery and reinventing himself.
He was allegedly caught with an explosive device in his car in a church compound, which led to his arrest and detention for 12 days.
It was around his birthday and anniversary and there are things he cant talk about.
"There are so many sides to this story. Let me give you context. It was a year at Standard and really fast-paced. So a really busy year I must say, took a little bit of time as well. Getting to the end of the year, 16th Dec was my birthday, things are slowing down, let's attend Sol Fest.
That's where I went, had a fantastic evening. I'm not gonna castigate and say this is my side of the story, I'm not doing any press release or any rejoinder. After the event there was a confrontation that happened, and after sitting down with a few friends there was a disagreement that went out of hand.
I'm not a terrorist folks. The fact that I worked in the former President's office doesn't have anything to do with what went through."
Explaining why his case was withdrawn. He denied influencing the direction his case took. He chose not to reply to all accusations and comments by KOT.
He felt a bit of a sense of betrayal by media, "I felt first hand what it felt to be story 1, 2 or 3. Everyone went with one side of it, I felt like it was a bit on the extreme in terms of understanding what exactly what was the context of it. I mean what do you mean blow up a church?"
He added;
"I'm here living my life, I'm so happy I'm getting speaking engagements I'll be leaving for the UK in September..."
He said the danger of the story being one-sided was hard and people may not appreciate the behind-the-scenes.
"It really...My heart goes out to my family because some things you can say, 'Ah it's fine, let me just take it by myself.' But I think it was too heavy. They were in and out of court and stuff like that my parents came from Nakuru and supported the kids."
This led to brands also holding back job offers for him as an MC and voice-over artist which frustrated him.
"But it's funny because the UN, developmental partners were like, 'Oh chief what is happening, we need you in the UK, come and let's have a chat.' So it's very funny and I think that's Kenya's cancel culture.
As soon as you've trended, the Google stuff might suffer a beating, it's ok, but life goes on because somebody will see what's online and paint a picture of you," he shared.
