Cleric, dad arrested after girl defiled during prayers in Homa Bay

Two men are being held at Magunga police station after they were linked to the defilement of a 16-year-old girl in Suba South.

The suspects arrested include the father of the girl and a clergyman.

The girl, who is in Form 3, is reported to have been sexually abused by the cleric who visited them last Thursday evening to allegedly pray for her healing.

The father was arrested for allegedly aiding the sexual offence.

The suspects were arrested on Saturday and are expected to be arraigned.

Officers from the children services department are making arrangements to take the girl to a rescue centre.

Suba children's officer Kepher Otago said the student was admitted at Magunga Subcounty Hospital for examination.

“The clergyman was expected to pray for the girl but he resorted to defiling her. We collaborated with security officers and arrested the suspects,” Otago said.

The girl fell sick and instead of taking her to hospital, her parents resolved to hold prayers for her healing.

It is reported that the suspect proposed that the prayer be conducted outside the house.

“The clergyman proposed to hold prayers for the girl in enclosed place outside their home compound to exorcise demons. He reportedly convinced the parents and left with the girl before he committed the offence,” Otago said.

While outside, the suspect asked the parents of the victim to get back into the house and leave him with the student where he defiled the girl.

Otago said the girl was threatened by the clergyman not disclose the matter to parents, but she shared the ordeal with one of her teachers.

“The teacher took her to hospital and informed the authorities," the children's officer said.

Magunga Subcounty Hospital clinical officer Richard Ojuok said they have been receiving minors with varying degrees of injuries inflicted through sexual molestation.

“The girl was introduced to some medication that prevented her from being affected by sexually transmitted diseases. We’re appealing to girls who happen to be defiled to seek medical attention as soon as possible,” Ojuok said.

Suba deputy county commissioner Sebastian Okiring asked the parents to protect their children from sex predators.

“We’ll not hesitate taking legal action against people who perpetrate defilement and other child molestation,” Okiring said.         BY THE STAR
