'Struggling': Ex-Mumias Workers Speak Of Tough Times, Demand Dues
This is after termination of their contracts in 2019 as the miller experienced problems.
Speaking to Wananchi Reporting, Petronila Kweyu, a 54-year-old resident of Esumeya sub-county, Navakholo, Mumias county, said she has been suffering from chronic illnesses, including diabetes and high blood pressure, and has been unable to keep up with costs.
Kweyu called for the release of her dues, saying she has accumulated many bills from having surgery on her hip, arm, and leg. She said she is owed over Ksh500,000.
“I did not expect things to turn out the way they did, and I had no savings to help sustain myself during these tough times," she said.
Kweyu went on to say that her two daughters were also depending on her financially as they did not have jobs.
Joyce Kasidi, another former worker at the factory, said she was not given notice on termination of her services, adding that she was owed up to Ksh100,000 in dues.
"I have faced major challenges in educating my children," she said.
Thomas Sakwa, who also worked at the company, said many of his colleagues have been languishing in poverty.
The workers have called on the government to intervene and help them get their dues. BY CITIZEN DIGITAL
