Matatu Operators Call Off Strike After Talks With NTSA
A planned Matatu strike that would have affected the Central Kenya region has been called off.
The strike, which was scheduled to kick off on Monday has been called off after talks between the Mount Kenya Matatu Owners Association and the National Transport Services Authority (NTSA).
Speaking in Thika on Sunday, the association’s chairman Michael Kariuki said the Public Service Vehicles (PSV) operators are ready to work with the government to streamline operations within the industry and ensure that drivers and conductors observe safety regulations set by NTSA on the roads.
”We have been assured by the authorities that there will be no operations going forward and if there will be any it will be communicated to us so that we sit down and see what’s required and needs to be done. Therefore, I am happy because the government has listened to us. We are also going to speak to our people and ensure that they are careful on the roads,” said Kariuki.
PSV drivers have been urged to exercise vigilance and caution particularly when ferrying children from school to their respective destinations to prevent further accidents.
As part of NTSA’s crackdown titled ‘Road Safety Clinic’, motorists were expected to present their National Identification cards as well as their valid licenses for scrutiny and authentication. BY CITIZEN DIGITAL
