Kenyans reject Raila's walk to work call

Kenyans on Twitter have rejected Azimio leader Raila Odinga's call to institute civil disobedience and refuse to pay taxes.

In his address during a rally on Tuesday at Kamukunji grounds, Raila asked his supporters to walk to work or alternatively car pool to limit consumption of petrol and diesel by public service vehicles.

This he said, would deny the Kenya Kwanza government revenue generated from the 16 per cent fuel levy as stipulated under the controversial Finance Act, 2023.

However, Kenyans on Twitter have argued that they cannot walk while their leader, Raila, made a grand entry to Kamukunji grounds driven in posh cars.

Others asked him to lead by example by walking from his home in Karen to other places.

Some also said that if they decide to walk, they will be arriving late at work since they live in far flung areas.

In his appeal, Raila had asked employers to allow their staff to walk to and from work.

He also asked Matatu operators to carry excess passengers and limit the number of vehicles on the road thereby limiting fuel consumption.

This is despite it being against traffic rules for public service vehicles to carry excess passengers.

Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi questioned Raila's request to Kenyans to boycott payment of taxes and use alternative means of transport to get to work.

The senior counsel questioned the rationale behind the request and wondered why the ODM leader did not ask Kenyans to use public service vehicles instead of walking.

"Eh...what really happened to Hon Raila? That "walk instead of using buses and Matatus".  Junet Mohamed nini mbaya na Baba (Raila)? He asked. (What is wrong with Baba).

The Azimio leader said they are going to teach Ruto a lesson never to mess with food and fuel.

He said Ruto will know that Kenyans are fed up but not helpless.

“Ruto and all those who think like him are going to learn the painful way, never to mess with the people’s food, fuel and freedom,” Raila said.   BY THE STAR
