End of stalemate as Ministry clears medical interns pay arrears
Medical interns can breathe a sigh of relief after the Ministry of Health released all their pending payments.
The interns had last month held protests outside the Ministry of Health demanding the release of their arrears dating back to January.
This puts an end to the standoff between the ministry and Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) over the matter that had seen them threaten mass action.
It was after the interns protested outside the ministry last month that they were paid one month dues with the PS Medical Services Harry Kimtai making a commitment to ensure the remaining arrears are cleared as soon as possible.
In a statement, the ministry confirmed that the arrears had been cleared on Thursday.
“We are delighted to announce that we have resolved all salary arrears for the interns who have been diligently serving since the previous year,” it said.
“We extend a warm welcome to these interns and express our appreciation for their commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare services.”
Kimtai further committed to streamlining the internship programme by ensuring that no gaps occur in the future.
To that effect, the ministry on Thursday posted more than 2,000 interns to their respective posts.
They include interns from various cadres such as pharmacists, medical officers, clinical officers, nurses, and dental officers.
