Azimio writes to Speaker communicating House leadership

Azimio La Umoja One Coalition party has written to National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang'ula communicating the coalition’s leadership ahead of the ODM PG meeting next week.

Azimio Secretary Junet Mohammed wrote to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirming Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi as the Leader of the Majority in the 13th Parliament.

He will be deputized by Kathiani lawmaker Robert Mbui.

Junet is the Majority Whip with nominated MP Sabina Chege as his deputy.

“Pursuant to Article 108 of the Constitution and Standing Order No. 19A of the National Assembly Standing Orders, having held our Parliamentary Group meeting on 16 – 17th September 2022 at the Stoni Athi Resort, Machakos County,” the letter dated September 21 reads.

“I am pleased to convey to you the names of the duly elected House leaders in the National Assembly representing the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.”

The letter comes even as Azimio leader Raila Odinga is scheduled to chair an ODM PG meeting to discuss amongst other things allocations of the leadership positions to forestall friction after some members led by ODM chairman John Mbadi criticised the new leadership.

On Thursday, Mbadi said he is not aware of the letter saying he has no problem with the communication.

He however said it is premature to make the communication when there is an impending PG scheduled for next week to discuss some of the issues around the leadership.

“I have no problem with the letter, they can write as many as they wish but what is the hurry for? Don’t we have a meeting next week to address some of the concerns raised by members?"Mbadi posed.

He disclosed the list is also a concern amongst lawmakers from Western.

“It is not about me because it is not a must I have to be in the leadership but it was just important to listen to all members before writing to the speaker,” the nominated MP said.
