Uhuru should keep off succession — Catholic priest

A Catholic priest, Fr Ambrose Kimutai, has said President Uhuru is wrong to take sides in his succession politics.

“President Kenyatta should lead by example in bringing the country together," he told the Star.

"We know,  everyone of us, he has someone he prefers but it is wrong for him to publicly antagonise those he does not want to succeed him,” he said.

The cleric said the President should instead play his political cards wisely, remain above the fray to avoid leaving a divided country.

“It’s our wish that as President, when he will be leaving office, the country will be united like never before and that should be his focus in ensuring  political temperatures are lowered,” he said.

He also spoke to reporters about the need to restore civility.

Speaking separately, Chama Cha Mashinani party leader Isaac Rutto and ODM nominated MP Wilson Sossion voiced similar concerns saying campaigns should be centred on issues and not ad hominem attacks.

“Let us be responsible so  we may have a peaceful election and everyone should be given a chance to go everywhere and ask for votes,” he said.

He said the culture of zoning the country should be shunned and everyone allowed to move freely while campaigning.

“Let’s be liberal and democratic enough so that whoever is coming to your area is allowed to campaign without fear of being attacked,” Rutto said.

Sossion lashed out at  Azimio-aligned leaders, saying they were inciting their supporters with hate messages. He asked why action was not taken against them.

He said Murang'a MP Sabina Chege's claims of vote rigging in 2017was meant to polarise the country.   BY THE STAR
