I will fix the economy if elected, says Raila Odinga

ODM leader Raila Odinga says he will prioritise the economy if elected president.

Speaking during the ushering in of the new year at Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli’s residence at Bofa Estate in Kilifi, Mr Odinga said as an engineer, it will be easier for him to ‘upgrade’ the economy.

“I will be taking over from President Uhuru Kenyatta, a political scientist, and being an engineer will enable me to upgrade the nation economically for the benefit of Kenyans,” he said.

Mr Odinga acknowledged efforts by the first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who brought freedom to the county, and President Daniel Moi who laid the foundation for the nation.

He lauded the third president Mwai Kibaki for coming up with the Vision 2030 plan and laid a foundation for national development.

Mr Odinga added that President Kenyatta is a political economist who formulated the Big Four agenda, leading the country to witness robust development in all sectors.

He said the Big Four has been mostly successful when it comes to infrastructure development. “Where the country is now requires an engineer, a person with experience in engineering who can take it to another level, and it is none other than yours truly,” he said.

Mr Odinga wished Kenyans a happy new year, adding that 2022 is a year of change brought by the elections and called on all those seeking political positions to maintain peace and desist from any form of chaos or conflict.

“We would like Kenyans to unite. That is the spirit of Azimio la Umoja,” he said.

Mr Atwoli said they are gearing up for the presidential campaigns, saying  Mr Odinga’s team  is more prepared than ever.

“This is a year of success; a year of clean people that will yield results that Kenyans want,” he said.

The Cotu boss warned Kenyans against electing Deputy President William Ruto.

Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe said they plan to start countrywide rallies beginning at Thika stadium to drum up support for Mr Odinga and ensure he clinches the presidential seat.

“ Ruto will not be President and should learn how to be an official leader of the opposition like those who became presidents in the country. He will then become the president after 10 to 15 years.”

Former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth called for peaceful campaigns.     BY DAILY NATION
