Kenya retain title with medal haul
Kenya retained the Mombasa Open Tong-IL Moo-Do International Martial Arts Championship title for the ninth year in a row after bagging 128 medals which include 39 gold, 33 silver and 56 bronze.
In the tournament that ended at Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa on Sunday night, Kenya’s national team Jasiri increased their medals catch by 24.
Their main challengers, Philippines, came a distant second after clinching 45 medals which include 19 gold, 19 silver and seven bronze. During last year’s event, Philippines collected 27 medals, 13 of them gold, 11 silver and three bronze.
DR Congo became the surprise package as they finished third having bagged in 12 gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals. Zambia were fourth with two gold, two silver and five bronze medals while Cote d’Ivoire finished in fifth spot with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Sixth place went to Burkina Faso who managed two gold medals and one silver medal as Angola claimed seventh position with two gold medals followed by Nigeria with a gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Japan completed the tournament in ninth place with one gold, a silver and two bronze medals. Thailand were 10th with a gold medal and a silver medal, USA and South Korea shared 11th position having each picked a gold and a bronze.
Iran and Turkey shared 14th place after each bagged a silver and four bronze medals while Congo Brazaville managed three bronze medals with Ethiopia finishing last after failing to get a single medal.
Sixteen countries participated in the tournament. Kenya Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation chairman Clarence Mwakio, who is also the Africa Tong-IL Moo-Do Federation president, described the event as thebest and more competitive.
