Cops linked to self-confessed serial killer Masten Wanjala's escape charged

Three police officers who were on duty when confessed serial killer Masten Wanjala escaped have been charged before a Nairobi court.

The three Phillip Mbithi, Boniface Mutuma and Precious Mwinzi denied two counts of aiding a prisoner to escape prison and neglect of official duty.

It is alleged that on the night of October 12 and 13 at Jogoo road police station within Nairobi county jointly aided Wanjala to escape from lawful custody at Jogoo Road Police station.

They also denied willfully neglecting to prevent the escape of Wanjala, a murder suspect, a duty they were dutifully bound to perform under the National Police Service Act.

Through Lawyer Danstan Omari, the three asked the court to grant them reasonable bond terms and supply them with all necessary documentation that will be used in the trial.

Senior Principal Magistrate Bernard Ochoi released them each on a Sh300,000 bond and a surety of the same amount or an alternative cash bail of Sh150,000.

Before they took plea, the prosecution told Senior Resident Magistrate Jane Kamau that the investigations were complete thus closing the miscellaneous file.

The three were released last week on Sh100,000 cash bail and have been reporting to the Investigating Officer.

The case will be mentioned on November 4.    BY THE STAR
