Kenya yet to record a case of virus reinfection - Health Ministry

Ministry of Health director general Dr Patrick Amoth during the daily Covid-19 briefing at Afya House on May 21, 2020.

Acting Director General for Health Patrick Amoth has revealed that Kenya is yet to record a case of reinfection from recovered Covid-19 patients.

However, in his weekly Q&A on Twitter where he answers questions or concerns about the virus, Amoth however warned that the likelihood of reinfection is there.

He urged all those who have recovered to taking extra precaution in order to hold the virus at bay.

"We have not recorded reinfection yet, however evidence from other contexts show that there is a possibility of reinfection. We therefore urge all those who have recovered to continue taking precaution. Wash hands. Wear masks. Sanitise. Keep physical distance," he said.

The DG reiterated that projections indicate the country is approaching its peak which is likely to be end of August to early or mid September.

He had earlier predicted that the peak of infection should be expected hence the ministry's plea that everyone observes infection prevention measures.

This comes as the number of positive cases jumped to 10,791 after 497 more cases were confirmed by the ministry on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the DG revealed that babies have recorded milder cases of coronavirus in Kenya as compared to other countries.

As of July 15, only one child had died since the onset of the pandemic in Kenya back in March 13.

The child was a  six year old boy with a pre-existing condition who succumbed to Covid-19 on April 3.

This comes as the alarming number of child infections recorded daily continue to rise.

"Babies and toddlers fair relatively well. We have only had a single mortality in this group so far,"Amoth said.
