Police have arrested five suspects in connection to the murder of a prominent Bungoma businessman on Monday night at Keringet area.
Mr Michael Gacheche alias Cheche was robbed of two million shillings and murdered by a gang that was armed with a pistol and an AK47 riffle.
Police, who recovered stolen goods worth Sh200,000 from the suspects, said one of the suspects is a Ugandan.
Bungoma South Sub-County Commander Wilson Nanga said his officers arrested four men and a woman on Thursday night at a house in Kanduyi area.
FIVE TELEVISION SETS
“During our operation, we recovered five television sets, a fridge, three sofa sets and several household items that we want residents to come and identify,” Mr Nanga said.
He said that police also recovered a pair of handcuffs, police boots and several mobile phones from the suspects who are now assisting police with investigations.
He said that the police believe that the arrested suspects are among a gang that has been terrorising residents of Bungoma town, Kanduyi and Kibabi.
He said that the five had rented a house in Kanduyi. The thugs, who were on motorbike, made away with the Sh2 million.
Mr Gacheche, who ran a petrol station business in Bungoma among other businesses, was buried on Wednesday at his village in Kambi Mawe area, Likuyani Constituency, in Kakamega County.
SHOT SEVERAL TIMES
He was shot several times in the chest outside Keringet Hotel along the Bungoma- Mumias road at around 8.30pm.
According to an eye witness, the attackers who were waiting for Gacheche on a motorbike, demanded the cash he had collected before shooting him severally.
Gacheche succumbed to the injuries before reaching Life Care Hospital in Bungoma where he had been rushed by neighbors and family members.
Mr Manuel Muli, a night guard in the area, said that the death was well planned and calculated.
The incident has raised fears among Bungoma residents who have called on the government to beef up security. The residents decried continuous attacks by thugs.
