5,000 bags of 'mercury sugar' were stolen from Bollore in Mombasa

At least 5,000 sugar bags suspected of containing mercury have been stolen from the Bollore warehouse in Changamwe, Mombasa Regency.

Changamwe County police commander Daudi Loronyokwe said 300 "good" sugar bags were also stolen from the warehouse.

Loronyokwe said seven people were arrested in connection with the theft of 300 bags.

"The guard who guarded the mercury sugar escaped but we were looking for him," he said.

Theft is said to have occurred in the past three weeks and is believed to be an insider's job, according to Mr. Loronyokwe.

After the crushing of sugar abroad in 2018, Secretary of the Interior Cabinet Fred Matiang'i raised the alarm, saying the sweetener contained mercury.

An analysis of 1,400 bags of illegal sugar from various parts of the country found traces of mercury, a result that Dr Matiang'i called surprising.

Since the operation, suspected sugar still exists in various warehouses throughout the country.
