A police officer was arraigned in Kisii County on Thursday for allegedly shooting and killing a barman.
Police constable David Mauti was charged at the High Court with the murder last Thursday night of 34-year-old Dominic Oyugi.
Mr Mauti is said to have gone to the bar with the intention of shooting a barmaid but ended up mistakenly killing the barman.
The accused denied the charge and was released on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.
Judge David Majanja ordered him to report to Sameta Police Station every two weeks until the case is determined.
WHAT HAPPENED
Investigations have not been concluded but reports indicated that the officer stormed into the bar to attack a barmaid in a case of love gone sour.
Mr Oyugi, who also worked as a boda boda rider in Kisii town, was killed instead.
At the time, Kisii County Commander Martin Kibet said Mr Mauti had asked for permission to go for supper before the crime took place.
He was based at Itumbe police station.
Mr Oyugi's body was taken to the morgue at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The case will be mentioned on May 6, 2019.
