Police officers in Trans Nzoia County are on the spot after they reportedly opened fire on residents of Kolongolo village leaving four dead and several others injured, including county assembly Speaker Joshua Werunga.
The violent exchange broke out on Sunday evening after residents accused the officers of manhandling a domestic violence suspect as well as extrajudicial killings.
They further alleged that, on confronting the police officers, they (officers) instead opened fire; killing two on the spot while the other two lost their lives while being ferried to the hospital.
Trans Nzoia County Assembly Speaker, Mr. Werunga, was reportedly shot by the officers as he rushed to the scene in a bid to quell the situation.
The injured were taken to Mt. Elgon Hospital in Kitale town but Mr. Werunga has since been transferred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital where he is currently recovering from his gunshot wounds.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, County Commissioner Erastus Mbui said investigations into the incident have already been launched.
