Traders count losses in Nyandarua after night fire

A trader ponders his next move after fireTraders in Tumaini market, Nyandarua County are counting losses after fire gutted several business premises in the wee hours on Sunday morning.
Witnesses said the fire started at about 4am in a hotel, then spread to nearby premises.
An electrical appliances shop, butchery, salons, and barbershops were burnt down.
Angry residents turned away firefighters because they arrived at 6am when the fire had already been contained with assistance from servicemen from the National Youth Service.
The deputy county commissioner Omar Ali intervened to rescue the firefighters from the irate mob.
"We alerted you soon the fire started, what were you doing all those hours, just go back. We do not need you here," shouted the residents, accusing the fire staff of incompetency.
Mr Ali thanked NYS for their prompt response and requested the county government to equip the camp with fire-fighting equipment.
"The NYS people did a wonderful job, they were prompt, well-organised and exhibited high level of efficiency and skills," said Mr Ali.
Ward representative Suleiman Kihika said he called the county officials when the fire was reported. The firefighters are stationed in Ol Kalou town, which is only 5km away from Tumaini market.
"We want the governor to investigate and take action against the staff," said Mr Kihika.
