Kenyan digital creator Shes Kemunto has ignited a nationwide debate after publicly questioning how some men manage to maintain luxurious lifestyles without any visible source of income.
In a now-viral Instagram story , the lifestyle influencer challenged the long-standing double standards in conversations about wealth and social image.
She noted that while women are often accused of depending on men for financial comfort, little is said about men who live extravagantly without known employment or business ventures.

“Let’s talk about men who don’t work, have nothing going on but live in luxurious apartments paying (80k+), drive posh cars, drink expensive liquor, parties etc. because it’s always about women this that,” she wrote. “So my question is what do these men do? Who are their target? Where do they get the money from? Are corporate babes their main target? Are they ‘hustlers’ or in short wameekwa?”
A Viral Conversation
Her remarks immediately set off heated discussions across X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, and Instagram, with thousands of users offering opinions on what has become one of Kenya’s most trending online topics this week.
Many praised Kemunto for openly questioning a social issue that is rarely discussed, arguing that the same scrutiny applied to women should also extend to men.
Others felt she had unfairly generalised, pointing out that not all men who appear wealthy rely on others — some simply choose not to publicise their legitimate sources of income.
Memes, quotes, and short reaction videos quickly flooded timelines, turning the debate into a full-blown cultural commentary.

Changing Gender Narratives
Kemunto’s post has also been praised for reversing the usual gendered discourse around money and dependence. Traditionally, women have faced criticism for being financially supported by partners, yet the same questions have seldom been asked about men.
By flipping that narrative, Kemunto may have opened the door for a more balanced conversation about financial ethics, image, and modern relationships in Kenya.
As the online debate continues, one thing is clear: Shes Kemunto has tapped into a cultural nerve, challenging both men and women to think critically about wealth, perception, and authenticity in the age of social media.
Setting a New Tone
Kemunto, known for her bold opinions and unapologetic social commentary, has yet to issue further clarification.

However, her post has already cemented her position as one of the few online personalities willing to confront taboo conversations about gender, money and modern relationships.
Whether people agree with her or not, one thing is clear Shes Kemunto has sparked a conversation that many have avoided for too long.
