Haaland and Lewis-Skelly have had beef since the heated 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Man City in September, where Pep Guardiola’s team scored a dramatic equaliser, sparking a chaotic post-game exchange. Haaland told Gunners boss Mikel Arteta to stay humble, a comment which came to haunt him when they lost at the Emirates. What did Lewis-Skelly do to Haaland? After scoring in Arsenal’s impressive win, the youngster mimicked Haaland’s popular celebration. While some criticised the teenager for mocking his opponent, others defended him, calling it harmless banter.
After the epic clash, Lewis-Skelly posted a ‘keep it humble’ message on his Instagram, part of a collaboration with Adidas. The 18-year-old has become a regular under Arteta. Interestingly, he made his debut against Man City in September. Eye-catching performances saw him earn a call-up to the England squad. Last season, he picked up two red cards, including one against West Ham, which ultimately affected Arsenal’s title hopes. The young defender explained the celebration. “To score my first goal for the club, that I supported as youngster, it means the world. It’s crazy!” Lewis-Skelly said. “And the celebration? I don’t know really. I was kind of in the flow. I wasn’t really thinking. Everything just kicked in.” Erling Haaland and Myles Lewis-Skelly battling for the ball during Arsenal vs Manchester City. Speaking to TIME, Haaland admitted they “got him”.
“They won the game 5-1. So yeah, they got me. If he wanted to use that moment to mock me, that’s fair enough for him. Whatever he wants to do, he can do.” He was also asked about his “stay humble” comment he made to Arteta. “I think it’s an important phrase, which a lot of people should use, including myself,’ Haaland added. “It’s one of the most important things, as individuals, to do.” When will Arsenal and Man City meet? The two sides will renew their rivalry in the Premier League next season, and it’s set to be an epic showdown. They will meet for the first time in 2025/26 in September 21 and then in April 21. They could also meet in cup competitions. Haaland has scored four goals in eight appearances against Arsenal.
