At least 6 killed after flash floods in Nairobi following heavy rains, officials say

At least six people died overnight in Nairobi following heavy rains that were experienced on Monday.

Police warned the number could rise because some may have been swept downstream.

Three of them—a mother and her two children—were killed when a boulder crushed their house in the Mathare area, police said.

Nairobi police commander George Sedah said the boulder, in the Mathare 4a informal settlement, turned deadly after it collapsed on the victims.

He said preliminary findings had shown a nearby river overflowed, weakening the structure and causing the rock to collapse onto the house opposite, killing the three as they slept.

“They drowned after the home was also crushed,” he said.

He said teams had been mobilised for a search and rescue mission.

The incident prompted local officials to evict other residents whose homes are at risk of flooding or being crushed by nearby rocks.

This follows warnings that the rains would continue in the city.

Officials said in the city’s Mukuru Kwa Reuben slums, one person died after being swept away by floods.

More than 500 residents were displaced by the sudden flooding, police said.

Two more bodies were recovered from different parts of Nairobi after being swept away by floods.

One person was found dead after drowning in the Ngong River at Likoni Bridge in South B.

The second body was retrieved from floodwaters along Jogoo Road, police said.

In Mukuru slums, residents say that they have been ignored despite several promises following deadly floods that caused massive destruction.

Rescue teams have been patrolling various places for possible recoveries.

The teams reported that some places are flooded and need urgent attention.

The county government said teams had been mobilised to respond to the flooded areas for help.

This will include unclogging blocked drainage.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had predicted that showers and thunderstorms would continue for the remaining part of the weekend.

Most parts of the country are experiencing rain.
