A young man who died on June 25th, 2024, was buried on Saturday, as mourners noted the poignant coincidence that he died and was buried on his birthday.
Wilson Wekesa Sitati, who turned 22 on June 25th, 2024, tragically lost his life after participating in anti-tax protests.
The eulogy described him as the third-born in his family, who had a passion for football. “He was a student at Olympic Technical Institute in Kibera, studying electrical engineering,” it read.
He died after a day of violent clashes between Kenyans and anti-riot police.
Wilson was laid to rest in his hometown of Kimilili, where hundreds attended the funeral, demanding justice for his death.
On the day of the protests, Wilson had gone to the Central Business District (CBD) to collect a food package from Bungoma. He never returned home, prompting his family to search for him.
They eventually found his body at the City Mortuary, identified by the clothes he had been wearing when he left home. His phone had been off for some time.
Police officers claimed they had found him among injured demonstrators. An autopsy revealed that Wilson died from blunt force trauma to the chest and neck.
Nairobi has been the center of demonstrations and riots, with dozens of young men participating in the weekly protests.
Security officials have responded with water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition to disperse protestors. Kenyans are now calling for police accountability regarding all reported deaths during these protests.
