What began as an ordinary week in Nyamware Village, Emenwa, Nyamache, Kisii County, has turned into an extraordinary spectacle, with hundreds of people now streaming into the village, each hoping to see what they believe is an image of “Mary, the Mother of Jesus”, appearing on a wall.
The quiet homestead of 67-year-old Charles Onsombi has suddenly become the centre of attention.
Visitors from different parts of the country have been making their way to the compound, many heading straight to one of Onsombi’s mud-thatched houses, a structure that was previously used as a kitchen where the alleged manifestation is said to have occurred.
Onsombi said the phenomenon was first noticed by his wife early last week, when she reported seeing what she believed to be an image of Mary, Mother of Jesus, on the kitchen wall.
The news quickly spread through Emenwa and neighbouring villages before finding its way onto social media. Within days, what was once a private family home had become a destination for hundreds of curious visitors.
Onsombi says the attention has been overwhelming, with the constant flow of people making it increasingly difficult for the family to maintain its normal routine, he says they have not been able to cook, take a shower and have a family discussion as the area has been turned into a pilgrimage site…the House is nearly collapsing due to stampede.
But amid the growing fascination, Onsombi says there is a crucial difference between what people are seeing on the ground and what has been circulating online.
He claims the image being shared widely on social media is not an accurate representation of what appears on the kitchen wall, alleging that some individuals may have digitally manipulated the photograph using Artificial Intelligence to make the image more pronounced and attract attention.
Despite this, some locals remain convinced that there is something unusual on the wall.
Those who have visited the homestead say they can see what they describe as the image of the *Virgin Mary*, although there are differing opinions on exactly what is visible.
For some believers, the manifestation is a matter of faith with locals maintaining that what one sees may depend largely on their faith and perception.
The unusual phenomenon has also attracted the attention of police in Nyamache, who have been deployed to the area as authorities seek to establish what exactly is behind the claims that have drawn hundreds of people to the homestead.
