Vocal Nyanza MP Recounts Hiring Excavator at Night to Destroy Kisumu Road Section

A deadly stretch of road, dozens of lives lost and mounting frustration pushed a Kisumu lawmaker to take an extraordinary step. Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor Nyanza admitted hiring an excavator at night to destroy section of the Coptic roundabout in Kisumu.  Nyakach MP Joshua Aduma Owuor has revealed that he personally hired an excavator to demolish part of the controversial Coptic roundabout along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway in Mamboleo, Kisumu. The incident, which occurred in mid August 2025, left many residents puzzled after they woke up to find a heap of soil and debris where part of the roundabout had stood. At the time, locals had no idea when the structure had been cleared, with many suspecting the operation was carried out under the cover of darkness. By mid-morning, officials from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) had arrived at the scene to clear the rubble using heavy machinery as traffic officers directed motorists along the busy highway. Months later, Aduma has publicly explained why he took the drastic action.

Why MP Aduma Owuor destroyed the Coptic roundabout The lawmaker made the remarks during the burial ceremony of Father John Pesa, the controversial cleric and founder of the Holy Ghost Coptic Church of Africa, who died on May 28. According to Aduma, he regularly uses the Kisumu-Kakamega road every weekend for the last 15 years and has closely witnessed the dangers posed by the roundabout. The MP said that despite raising concerns with authorities, the roundabout remained in place even as accidents continued to claim lives.  He argued that the structure had been poorly designed, making it difficult for motorists to navigate safely. According to him, vehicles frequently lost control while approaching the section, resulting in fatal crashes. “I felt I should say this today. As one of the lawmakers in Kisumu county, I went and told the CS in charge of roads that there is a roundabout that was poorly designed, such that when cars approach it, they lose control, resulting in accidents and loss of lives,” Aduma said.
